What is God’s Purpose and the Reason He Fulfills His Will?

What is God’s purpose and the reason He fulfills His will? This is surely a very complex question. Since ancient times, people have tried to figure that out using their imagination, abilities, and passions. God says in His Word that the secrets belong to Him, and no man can fully know Him here in this life. His knowledge is inscrutable, and the human mind cannot comprehend it. Still, He chose to reveal Himself to humankind and give them the chance to know Him personally. Even so, we will only know Him in part, but we will receive forgiveness for our sins, which is the most important thing.

As we observe nature, the universe, and how everything functions, we notice that there is a design behind it, and most importantly, there is an order—an order that flows naturally without any effort. It's not like when people try to organize and put things in order, and even with their best efforts, there might still be discrepancies. Nature is perfect, and I am talking about an undefiled nature without any human intervention. There is a perfect order created by God, from the great celestial bodies, such as the planets and the immense cosmic structures, such as the galaxies, to the smallest details, including molecules and atoms. Everything is perfect. We can say “almost” everything except for one thing, because even though humanity seems to be progressing, we know that not everything is in order.

Humankind has strayed because of sin. They have chosen to live in it and continue to choose it today. This is not something God is pleased with, and it is outside His order.

We know that He is just and righteous. This is His nature. He cannot stand sin. It is not something He can choose to do or not. He cannot accept any disorder, and this is in His nature. The fact that He sent His Son to die to redeem us shows that. If God could have chosen to accept sin, He could have done so. Still, there is a law in His nature, according to which each wrongdoing needs to be paid for and redeemed. Since this law cannot be overridden, the only way for Him to save us is by sending His Son to pay for our wrongs. He does this because He loves us and doesn't want us to pay the price for our wrongs and lose our souls, being separated from Him for eternity. He wants us to be close to Him. He could have left us to pay for our sins, and all would have been in order again, but instead He decided to bring that order by sending His Son to do it in our place. That shows that He did it for love. Many people today cannot understand God and the reason for a sacrifice.

Misunderstanding what God is doing and how He accomplishes His will can lead to being upset with Him and rejecting His love. Even if we will never understand everything in a moment, we need to know that God does everything possible for us to accept Him and have communion with Him. The matter is that there is only one way, and this is through His Son, who offers forgiveness through His sacrifice on the cross. There is only one way because forgiveness is the most important thing for us in God’s sight. It is this way because, due to our sin, we have gone astray and fallen short of what is ordinary in front of God. This order is part of His nature, and He cannot disregard it. Justice must be served for every sin committed. We can compare it to an instinct He has.

That’s why, on one occasion when the nation of Israel had to meet Him on the mountain to hear His commandments, He told Moses not to let anyone come near to gaze at the Lord, lest they perish (Exodus 19:21-23). The fire of His holiness was going to consume them. Even Moses wasn’t allowed to see His face (Exodus 33:18-23). He protected them from what His holiness could do to them. He could have done it in a simpler way and forsaken His holiness for a moment and put it aside so that they could draw close to Him, but He couldn’t. By this, we see that this is a part of His nature, and He cannot disregard it. The same way He acted that time, He acts today – He cannot forsake His holiness, but He found a way for us. The only way to avoid His justice is through faith in what Jesus did on the cross. This is valid only for those who believe in that sacrifice. This way, their sins are cleansed, and they can be accepted by Him. This is His desire, but there is only this way to be accomplished – through forgiveness and reconciliation with Him. That's why the sacrifice accomplished on the cross is so important. The reason God performed it and sacrificed something so precious to Him as His Son shows that He couldn't have done it any other way and that He cannot go against His nature and principles. That’s why He warns us that there will be a judgment. The Son of God took that judgment upon Himself for everyone who believes in Him. That’s why we need to follow His way. He does everything possible to make it happen, and we can believe and repent. He doesn’t want to force us; He wants to attract us through His love.
